WEIGAND COMBAT DX-TYPE FRONT SIGHT BASES

Weigand Combat DX-type front sight bases add a degree of sight flexibility to revolvers heretofore unavailable. Bowen Classic Arms has widely adopted these sights to various revolver service packages. Coupled with our Rough Country rear sights which also permit ready interchange of sight blades, it is possible to fit a nearly unlimited number of sight blade combinations. Various suppliers offer a variety in front sight blades in wide range of style, heights and shapes.

If you like to tinker and experiement with your sights or area middle-age cooter looking for the best available sight picture, these sights dramtically simplify your efforts since the end user can change blades without recourse to a gunsmith once the bases are installed. We’ve never had it so good. DX front sight blades are hand-detachable. To remove the blade, pull it firmly to the rear, compressing the retaining spring and plunger and then tip up the front of the blade to release it from the base. It’s that simple. The retaining spring is pretty stiff and some blades are tightly fitted or pretty slick so removal can be tough. In some cases, you may need to resort to a padded vise. Just clamp the blade in set of aluminum jaws lined with paper and then push the gun forward and then tip it down to release.

There are now numerous suppliers of DX blades and bases and the parts do not always mix and interchange as well as we would like. For ease of detachment in the field or for installation of new blades, you may need to do a bit of fitting. If you are not handy with a file and vise, this is probably best left to your local gunsmith. Two fitting areas:

1. the point of the dovetail foot can be rounded and dulled a bit to ease removal
2. the foot width may be excessive and warrant thinning a bit to enter the slot.

Please note: the exposed portion of some of the Express Sight System dot and tritium-dot blades are wider than the foot. In some cases, the foot is not always machined to size all the way down to the blade proper. When installed, you may see daylight under between the blade and base. The foot can be filed carefully with a knife-edge file to correct this and then cold blued.
